If the entire Sahara desert is covered with photovoltaic panels what will become of the earth?

Dec 15, 2022

Let's have a brainstorm, suppose the world's largest desert - the Sahara Desert is covered with solar panels, what will happen to the earth?

Covering the Sahara Desert with Solar Panelssolar panel

Some scientists have done some calculations: if you covered 1% of the Sahara Desert with solar panels, you could generate enough electricity to meet the world's energy needs.

solar power plants are particularly suitable for remote areas without electricity, generating electricity close to the area where it is used, reducing the need to build long-distance power grids and the loss of power on transmission lines; they are also not affected by energy crises and unstable fuel markets.

In fact, solar solar power generation has long been one of the most important ways to solve the energy supply and environmental crisis in many countries and regions around the world.

If solar panels were laid on the desert floor, it would double the amount of rainfall in the area and increase the vegetation cover by 20%. Not only does it solve the energy supply problem, but it also improves the green vegetation cover.

Although, it is good idea for desert areas to generate enough energy to power the world, the video also points out: to realise this idea one must also consider solving the problems of energy transmission, long distance solar losses, high costs, financing, geopolitics, etc.

I believe that as solar plants become cheaper to install and technologies such as extra high voltage transmission continue to mature, one day in the future we could actually see the Shahra Desert covered with PV panels, transmitting green electricity to all corners of the world.

China's Success Story

Although the construction of power stations in the Shahra Desert is still an idea for the time being, there are already many successful experiences of building power stations in the desert in China.

In the Tengri Desert in Ningxia, there is a solar power plant covering 43 square kilometres, which can only be seen in its entirety using aerial photography.

This huge solar power station, which combines solar and desert management and water-saving agriculture, has created a successful precedent for grid-connected solar power stations in deserts across the country and the world.

On October 12, another project of the country's largest centralised desert solar power generation base began construction, with a project capacity of up to 500MW. After the power station is completed and put into operation, it will be integrated with the first phase of the Dalat solar project, becoming the country's largest centralised desert solar power generation base.

Residents Can Also Build Solar Power Plants on Their Rooftops

Solar panel installed on the roofs of residents, effective insulation in summer, reducing indoor temperatures by 3-5 degrees; in addition, the electricity from the solar power station can also be supplied to household appliances at home during the day, saving electricity costs; do not worry about the electricity that can not be used up, through the grid can be sold to the state, in addition, each degree of electricity generated by the power station can also get the state subsidies issued by the income. One-time investment, stable income for 20 years!

Have you installed a solar power station on your roof?
